Alappuzha boat racing
Alappuzha is a district in the Indian State Kerala and is famous for its boat races. Alappuzha boat racing is held in the months of August and September. The most important boat races called Nehru trophy boat race are held at various places of this district, including Punnamada, Thiruvandoor, Karuvatta, the Payippad and Thaikkottam. Thousands of people from various parts of the world come to Alappuzha to witness this spectacular water sport.

Alappuzha boat racing starts with a grand procession that unfolds with various types of racing boats. They are guided by the largest and the most magnificent boat called “the chundan”. The Chundan boat can seat more than hundred rowers. It bends to a height of fifteen to twenty feet and it resembles the neck of an angry snake. The rowers sing songs called Vanchi pattu, which enhances the mood of the event. The songs synchronize with the beat of the oars, offering a banquet to your ears and eyes.

The Chundan boats are polished down with special oil, before racing. This offers a glossy look to the boat and it also helps the boats to glide easily through the water. The leader of the boat stands on the stern or the helm called amaram with long oars that are specially made for him. The speed of the boat and its balance is determined by the efficiency of the leaders. They have the ability to handle the oar perfectly. A muscular plunge of the oar can take the boat three leaps forward. The spirit of competition and coordination make this event a dynamic one.
