Mumbai, Elephanta Island
Elephanta Island in Mumbai is renowned for its outstanding Elephanta Caves. It is easily accessible from Apollo Bunder near the Gateway of Mumbai by ferry boats. They are declared as World heritage site by UNESCO.

Elephanta Island was originally known as Gharapuri. It was christened after the elephant statue near the landing area by the Portuguese. The rock cut temples and amazing architectural designs in this island make it one of the most prominent tourist spots in Mumbai.

The Elephanta caves have been carved during 9th to 13th century during the reign of Silkara Kings. You need to climb over hundred steps to reach the hill. You can enjoy the panoramic views of the island from there. There are seven caves and the most important among them is the Mahesha Murti cave. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You can see several figurines of Shiva in lingam form here. You can also view various forms of Shiva, like Ardhanariswara (Lord shiva and Goddess Parvati in one body), Gangadhara and Kalyanasudara in this rock cut temple. In the main chamber, the colossal image of Trimurthi Sadashiva offers you a divine feeling. This figure depicts the three forms of Shiva, as the creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer of the Universe. Another massive idol Panchamukha Shiva (lord with five faces) would impress you more. The Elephanta Island boasts of several shrines that were cut from solid rock. The carved walls depict various scenes from Hindu mythology. The Shiva temple has three entrances and the main hall comprises of twenty pillars that appear to clutch the roof of the cave.
