Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Kumily in Kerala, a beautiful state in India. It is situated in the ranges of the Western Ghats and it offers a refuge to elephants, Nilgiri Taur, Tiger and Nilgiri Langur. You can also view lion tailed Macaque, flying squirrel and Malabar giant squirrel here. There is a beautiful lake at the heart of this sanctuary. If you have luck, you can enjoy viewing herds of elephants swimming the lake. Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is actually a Tiger Reserve, but most of the tourists are attracted by the playfulness of the Indian elephants. It is a home to varied wild animals like Gaur, Wild pigs, Mouse deer, barking deer, sambar and Dole. It is estimated that there are forty tigers here. Due to its large water bodies, it offers shelter to various types of birds. You can see Indian Darters, Kingfishers, Gray headed fish eagle, orioles, the great Malabar hornbill, Oriental honey-buzzard, Cormorants, wood pigeons, little green heron and racket tailed Drongoes in this sanctuary. If you plan a trek into the Periyar National park, you may have a chance to see python, king cobra or Monitor Lizards. Boat cruises in the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary let you enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and its surrounding. If you are fortunate, you can spot a sambar deer or wild boar. The upper deck of the boat is the best for wildlife viewing. You can maximize your chances, by taking a boat ride at 7 a.m.
