There are many reasons that Chicago has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. Centrally located in the Midwest, Chicago is a great meeting spot for people from varying destinations. With many options in cuisine, the arts, parks and entertainment venues, like Chicago's famous Blues clubs, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this massive city.
Chicago is split into four main sections. These are : the Chicago Loop (the downtown and financial district), the North Side, the South Side and the West Side. These sections are further broken down into smaller neighborhoods. Chicago has often been described as a city of neighborhoods and when visitors view the varying cultures and night life in the various neighborhoods, it's easy to see why it's been given this designation
Some neighborhoods within Chicago are denoted by their ethnic population. Chicago has a China Town, Polish neighborhood, a Middle Eastern neighborhood – and many others. Locals can visit these diverse neighborhoods to sample new cuisines, shop for ethnic goods and to get a taste of cultures from all over the world – without ever leaving Chicago's bounds.
Chicago is also known for its many parks. In fact, it has more parks per square foot than any other city within the United States. Its largest park is Lincoln Park, which is home to numerous museums and cultural centers, as well as a large, comprehensive zoo – all of which are completely free.
In fact, one of the reasons that Chicago is such a tourist destination is due to the numerous free activities throughout the year. In the summer months, visitors and residents can enjoy free movies in Grant Park, which draw crowds in the 10s of thousands. There are also over 30 free festivals each year, from Blues Fest, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, to smaller festivals held within individual neighborhoods, which celebrate the diversity and intrigue the city has to offer.
Chicago also has one of the best public transit systems in the country. Those wanting to get from the very southern edge of the city to the most northern point can do so by using bus or El train service. Most buses and trains run throughout the evening so users can travel freely without worry of being stranded.
Sports are also a huge part of Chicago life. There are currently two Major League Baseball teams within Chicago – The Chicago White Sox, on the South Side, and the Chicago Cubs, on the North Side. Other notable professional sports teams include the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Fire and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Those looking to shop will find themselves in paradise in Chicago, no matter what type of shopping they typically enjoy. Michigan Avenue, also known as the Magnificent Mile, is home to some of the most exclusive boutiques in the country. Those with less luxurious taste can visit any of the neighborhoods to shop with smaller, independently owned stores. There are also numerous Farmer's Markets, some of which run throughout the entire year, so the foodies in the area can always keep their stomachs full and content.
