There are many unique aspects of Chicago that impress visitors and locals alike. One such example are the double decker streets running through the Loop of Chicago. The most famous of these double decker streets is likely to be Wacker Drive. In fact, Wacker Drive has been used in numerous films over the years.
When Wacker Drive was first established, the bottom street was intended for day to day traffic, while the top street was intended for luxury vehicles. It was a way for the gliterrati of the Chicago scene to stand out from the rest. As time went on, the bottom street became used for through traffic and trucks, while the top street is now used for those traveling within the surrounding streets.
One of the most unique aspects of Wacker Drive is the views it gives. Whether you're standing on Lower Wacker, looking up at the looming city and all its majesty, or you're standing on Upper Wacker, looking down on the streets below, and up on the large and impressive skyscrapers, there are views from all around.
Chicago is well known for its additions to architecture movements throughout the decades and this is certainly showcased on Wacker Drive. There are numerous high rise buildings, some of which house major financial institutions and top companies. A company with an address on Wacker Drive is likely to be associated with success and luxury.
Wacker Drive is one of the options that's used to cross the Chicago River. Because it does cross this river, some of the most beautiful photography in Chicago is taken from the Wacker Drive bridge that crosses the river. From the bridge you can see the river winding through downtown and the buildings that rise upon its shores.
Wacker Drive was initially completed in 1926 and holds much of the old world charm that you'd expect from a street of its age. In 2001-2002, the bridge and street were revamped to ensure that it was on par with safety regulations. Parts of the bridge had begun to crumble and it was time for repairs. However, the city was careful to maintain the historical roots and look of this staple of Chicago's downtown area.
These days, many people travel Wacker Drive to get to and from work, driving amongst tourists visiting from all over the world. Those who want a true taste of the beauty and bustle of Chicago often visit Wacker Drive and are impressed with the many views and intrigue found there.
