Fatehpur Sikri is a small city in the district of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Mughal Emperor Akbar constructed it in the year 1570. It served as the capital of the emperor from 1571 to 1585. Buland Darwaza in Fatehpur Sikri is the largest gateway in the world. It was built by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Gujarat. You need to climb 42 steps to reach this gateway. It is built of red sandstone and inlaid with white marble.
• Jama Masjid:
Jama Masjid is another fascinating structure in Fatehpur Sikri. It is an important sacred center for Muslims. The main mosque consists of two arcaded halls, which have two square chambers topped with dome.
• Tomb of Salim Chisti:
Tomb of Salim Chisti is located in the Jama Masjid complex. It is a mausoleum constructed by Akbar for his Sufi guru Salim. The Saint blessed Akbar with his son and heir. Even now devotees, especially childless women throng the tomb to seek the blessings of the saint. The tomb is an exquisite structure, which features elegant marble screens enclosing the tomb building. The marble cenotaph of the saint is covered by a green cloth and is inlaid with the mother of pearls. The platform is decorated with black and yellow marble, which is arranged in beautiful geometrical patterns. The main chamber door is carved intricately with fine patterns. It boasts of inscriptions from the holy Quran.
