Gwalior is an important city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located 76 miles away from Agra. It served as a capital city of the great Sardar Maharaja Shrimant Madhavraoji Shinde. It attracts many tourists, as it bears a strong historical legacy. The most important attraction in Gwalior City is the world famous Gwalior fort. You can see several buildings like Gujari Mahal and archeological museum, Man Mandir palace, Sas Bahu temples, Suraj Kund, Teli Ka Mandir and much more inside the fort.
• Gwalior Fort:
Gwalior fort is the most famous attraction of the city. The historical significance attaches to this fort attract thousands of tourists every year. Mahmud of Ghazni tried to capture this fort, but failed in his attempt. Qutubuddin Aibak took over the fort, but he soon lost it. The most significant history of India occurred in this fort. Rani Laxmibai, the Rani of Jhansi sacrificed her life for Indian freedom struggle in this fort.
Gwalior fort is built over massive rocks. The beauty of the fort attracted many rulers and Babur; the famous Mughal Emperor described it as the pearl among the fortresses of Hind. You can find some of the famous palaces and temples in Gwalior inside the fort. The fort is open to public from 9AM to 5 PM.
• Man Mandir Palace:
Man Mandir palace is an outstanding structure built by raja Man Singh Tomar. It is located inside the Gwalior fort. The beautifully embellished interiors and exteriors of this palace would amaze you greatly. The walls of this palace depict a stunning fresco of ducks that wade in the waters. You can also enjoy the paintings of elephants, trees and peacocks in the parapet walls. The palace has a prison dungeon, where Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor imprisoned and later killed his brother Murad.
• Gujari Mahal and archeological museum:
Gujari Mahal is an exquisite palace built by raja Man Singh for his beloved wife Mrignayani, a Gujar princess. The palace is now converted into an archeological museum, where you can see various rare artifacts.
• Teli ka Mandir:
Teli ka Mandir is an old temple in the Gwalior fort. It enshrines Lord Vishnu. The entrance door of the temple boasts of beautiful archway, featuring sculpted images of river goddesses and Garuda, which is the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
• Sas bahu temple:
Sas bahu means mother in law and daughter in law, but the temple is not dedicated to mother in law and daughter in law. It is devoted to Lord Vishnu, whose other name is Sahsatrabahu, the one with many hands. The name was later changed into Sas bahu temple by misinterpretation. The temple is a red sandstone structure and it features beautiful statues and intricate patterns.
• Suraj Kund:
Suraj Kund is a water tank located inside the marvelous Gwalior fort. It is believed to be the place, where the Saint Gwalipa healed King Suraj Sen, who was suffering from Leprosy.
• Tansen Memorial:
Tansen Memorial is a must see place in Gwalior. Tansen was a highly talented musician in Akbar’s court. His memorial is a simple, yet elegant structure built in Mughal style of architecture.
