Jhansi is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It assumes historical and cultural significance. The two most significant events attached with Jhansi are the battle between Rani Laxmi Bai and the British Army and the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.
Jhansi Fort is the most important place to visit in Jhansi. It is located in the outskirts of the city. You can see a wonderful collection of sculptures in this fort. Raja Bir Singh Deo built this fort on a rocky hill called Bangra in the year 1613. Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi resided in this fort. You can gain access to the fort via any of the ten gates. Sagar gate, Orchha gate, Chand gate, Khanderao Gate and datia gate are some of the popular gates of Jhansi fort. It houses a Shiva temple and Ganesh temple. The Jhansi museum found inside the fort exhibits a fine collection of weapons, statues and dresses representing the famous Chandela dynasty.
Rani Mahal is another must see place in Jhansi. It was built by Ragunath II. It is a two storied building that has a quadrangular courtyard. The palace features six spacious halls and numerous small rooms. You can approach the Durbar hall by climbing a flight of steps. It is ornamented with beautiful paintings along with some attractive floral and geometrical patterns. The arches of the palace are decorated with peacock and rose patterns. You can see some stone sculptures belonging to Madanpur, Chandpur and Dudhai regions in the ground floor of this palace.
