The port of Hamburg

The main attraction of the Hanseatic city, the port of Hamburg is an impressive labyrinth of canals, wharves and bridges. With nearly 75 km2 surface and its 60 docks and the floating dock, is the largest in the world and the largest port in Germany. Axis of trade with Eastern Europe and North America, is the main port for the Swiss, Austrians, Scandinavians and many Eastern European countries. Hamburg is connected with at least two ships a day, with Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, China and America. Everything here speaks of freedom and faraway countries, a tour of the Speicherstadt, with the old port and docks, or a visit to the legendary naval museum is enough for the visitors to understand why Hamburg is called the "Gateway to the World". Hence, between 1850 and 1939, nearly 5 million Europeans began their journey to the New World. There are many structures and artifacts that make the charming port of Hamburg an obligatory destination for every traveler. Towards the city in an area previously occupied by port facilities, stands today the new district of HafenCity: today is one of the biggest rebuilding and development urban projects in Europe, old and new seem to blend in here in rare harmony. Among the Deichtorhalle and Baumwall you can find the centennial Speicherstadt, the largest complex of stores of goods in the world. Valuable goods are stored here, such as coffee, tea, cocoa, spices and tobacco, and there is the largest stock of oriental rugs in the world. Finally, do not miss, the Fischmarkt. Founded in 1703, the oldest market in Hamburg is open every Sunday from 5.00 to 9.30 (in the winter semester from 7). Here you can really find everything from: china, silverware, perfumes, carpets, spices. The soul of Hamburg seems to reside in this place, between its banks, colors, smells and stores. Anyone who proposes to explore the intimate side of this city really can not do less to discover this place.
